  1. Introduction

Place value is the value of each digit in a number. The value of every digit in a number is different based on its position. A number might have two similar digits but different values, which is decided by the position that the digit holds in the number.

  1. Place Value Definition

Place value is the value of a digit according to its position in the number such as ones, tens, hundreds, and so on.

Example: The place value of 5 in 3458 is 5 tens, or 50. However, the place value of 5 in 5781 is expressed as 5 thousand or 5,000.

  • It is important to understand that a digit can be the same, but its value depends on its position in the number.

  1. Example Questions on Place Value

Example:

What is the value of the 6 in the decimal 0.363?

In the decimal number 0.363, the value of the 6 is in the hundredths place.

Value of 6 = 6 x 1/100 = 6/100 = 0.06

Thus, the value of the 6 is 0.06

Example:

How much larger is the 9 than the 5 in the number 9785?

The 9 is in the thousands place, so its value is: 9 x 1000 = 9000

The 5 is in the ones place, so its value is: 5 x 1 = 5

So, 9000 - 5 = 8995

The 9 is 8995 larger than the 5 in the number 9785.
