  1. Introduction

Area is the measure of the amount of space inside a two-dimensional shape or surface. It's typically measured in square units (e.g., square meters, square feet, etc.)

The table below shows the formulae for calculating the area for some of the most common 2D shapes and Circle:

Chart of geometric shapes showing formulas for area: triangle, square, rectangle, parallelogram, trapezium, and circle.

  1. Example Question on how to find the area of a 2-D shape

Example: Find the area of the triangle.

A right triangle with a vertical line of 12 units and a base of 20 units is shown on a white background.

Solution: In the given triangle, base = 20 units and height = 12 units

Area of triangle = ½ x base x height

Area of triangle = ½ x 20 x 12 = 120 square units

  1. What is the Area?

The area is the size of a surface. It helps to imagine how much paint would cover the shape. It's a way to quantify how much space is enclosed within a boundary.

  1. Approximate Area by Counting Squares

We can put the shape on the grid and count the number of squares.

Approximate Area by counting grey squares

These shapes have the area 9.

Sometimes, the squares on the grid don't match the shape exactly, but we can get an "approximate" answer.

Pentagon area calculation with approximate area method
  • more than half a square counts as 1

  • half square counts as ½ x number of half squares

  • less than half a square count as 0

This pentagon has an area of approximately 17

  1. Example Question on how to find the approximate Area

Example: Find the area of the given figure by counting the squares.

Sample question for approximate area calculation method

Solution: Number of fully filled squares = 8

Number of half-filled squares = ½ x 2 = 1

Number of more than half-filled squares = 0

Total Area = 8 + 1 = 9 square units
